I have been a practicing artist since the early 1960’s, when I majored in fine arts at Central Washington University and attended the Art Student’s League in New York City. While I have painted or engaged in other forms of creative expression since that time, I have been able to work full-time as an artist only since 2003.

Many artists aspire to make a statement, often social or political. What I most enjoy doing through my work is invoking consideration and inspiration from concepts and themes found in scripture, using contemporary art as the vehicle. Whether or not individuals share my faith, almost all relate to the emotions and themes presented.

Much, although not all, of my work since 2003 continues and builds on my longstanding interest in interpreting scripture from the Bible through visual expression. My recent work includes a series of ten paintings on the Old Testament character of Job. The series reflects themes of wealth, pain, loneliness, sorrow, restoration, and strength. I have also completed a series of 14 paintings capturing themes from the life and teachings of Paul the Apostle, including joy and peace in hard times, inner strength, and various other concepts.

Over the past several months, I have produced a series of sculptures (wood and mixed media) largely inspired by the musical and poetic themes of the Psalms. This series is the result of two different long-standing desires: to do a series based on the Psalms; and to create art integrating wood, shapes, and paint.

And, of course, during this time I have done a great deal of “just painting” as well. My work continues to evolve, as I grow in my faith and as an artist.
